Criminal Law
Being arrested by the police, or being charged with a criminal offence, can be an extremely stressful experience. If you have been arrested or charged, you should act immediately.
Our solicitors offer expert advice through every stage of the criminal investigation and court proceedings. We cover all types of criminal matters. Our criminal solicitors are available to assist day or night.
We provide the following services:
-
Advice & representation at police stations – 24 hours, 7 days a week
-
Representations at Magistrates’ courts
-
Representations at Crown Courts
-
Appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
Advice and representation at police stations is available to all, paid for under Legal Aid, regardless of income. You have the right to get legal advice, either in person or by telephone. Our solicitors will attend the police station at any time during day or night to assist you.
At the police station, our experienced solicitors will advise you of the legal implications of the allegations against you, and guide you through the procedure while in custody. We will advise you in relation to the offence for which you have been arrested, the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence, and the likely outcome in your particular circumstances. We understand that you are anxious of what may happen: we do our best to make you feel comfortable that you receive the best legal advice and representation.
At the end of the period in custody, if you are charged with a criminal offence, we will continue to assist you and represent you in court proceedings. You may continue to be entitled to legal aid for your representation in court.
In the magistrates’ court, entitlement to legal aid depends on the offence and your financial circumstances. If your income or capital is below a certain limit, you will be entitled to legal aid. (Note that legal aid is not available for certain minor offences, such as most traffic offences.) In Crown Court cases, all defendants are entitled to legal aid. However, if your income or capital is above a certain level, you will be asked to make a contribution towards your legal costs.
We will advise you, guide you and represent you in court from early stages of court proceedings through to trial. If you have been remanded in custody, we will do our best to get you released on bail. We work with a team of skilled, experienced and competent barristers who will represent you through the trial process. If you prefer to be represented by a barrister of your choice, we are able to accommodate your request.
If you have been wrongly convicted or excessively sentenced, we will be able to assist you to appeal to the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court. If you do not wish to rely on Legal Aid, all these services are available on a private fee basis.
